Home fragrance too strong: what should you do?

If a home fragrance seems too strong, stop adding it and air the room. Do not try to cover it with another fragrance, a household spray or a homemade recipe. First identify what is diffusing, then decide whether you want to use it again later in a smaller amount or keep the space free from added fragrance.

For KMK PARIS sprays such as LIANE LIBRE and RIVAGE CUIVRÉ, precautions and directions appear on the product page and label. A woody or spicy composition does not need a generous application to be enjoyed.

First steps: stop, identify, ventilate

  1. Stop applying it: do not add any more room spray, even if you intended to scent another area.
  2. Identify the sources: the fragrance may come from a spray, candle, diffuser or several products used together.
  3. Stop diffusion according to the instructions: extinguish a candle using the appropriate method and let it cool; for a diffuser, follow its directions without emptying or handling it blindly.
  4. Ventilate: keep air circulating and allow the fragrance presence to diminish before considering another use.

Do not move a burning or hot candle to open a window. Extinguish it and let it cool before moving it. Also avoid letting a draught act directly on a flame.

Why can an atmosphere seem overloaded?

Several applications in the same space

In a studio or open-plan living area, the entrance, living room and kitchen may share the same volume of air. Three applications in three corners do not necessarily constitute three separate uses. Count what has been added throughout the space.

Several people use the same product

You sprayed before guests arrived, then someone else did the same without knowing. Next time, agree on a single shared application. This change in organisation may be enough to avoid unintended accumulation.

Several fragrance sources overlap

An existing diffuser, a candle and a spray may form a combination you had not planned. The same issue can arise with scented cleaning products. Before changing fragrance, simplify the combination.

The accord does not match your taste

You may like the idea of a woody fragrance but dislike the oud, leather or vanilla in a composition. A reduced dose changes the amount added; it does not remove a note from the fragrance. This scent may simply not suit you.

What not to do to “neutralise” it

  • Add another fragrance: you are layering a scent rather than removing the first one.
  • Spray a household mixture: a recipe involving vinegar, cleaning product or essential oils is not a universal answer to excessive fragrance.
  • Dilute the bottle: adding water or alcohol changes the formula and is not an adjustment intended by the manufacturer.
  • Change the surface: a KMK PARIS spray must not be applied to textiles to diffuse differently.
  • Heat or decant it: do not turn the spray into a refill or a fragrance for an appliance.

How long should you wait?

There is no universal waiting time for every product and room. Volume, openings, amount and existing sources vary. A precise time therefore cannot be guaranteed.

Wait until the atmosphere feels comfortable again before considering another use. You may also decide not to scent this area anymore. The aim is not to find an acceptable dose at any cost for a space or a person that prefers no fragrance.

If the problem is a spill or incorrect application

A leak onto furniture or a spray applied to linen is not treated like a scent that is simply too noticeable in the air. Stop using it and consult the product and surface instructions. Do not mix cleaners to try to speed up the result.

In the event of an incident or physical discomfort, follow the label’s directions and seek appropriate advice; this guide concerns fragrance use, not the management of an exposure. Keep the bottle to identify the product.

Before trying again

Choose one product, one area and one moment. Follow the instructions, begin sparingly and allow time before adjusting. Also ask the people sharing the space for their views.

To prevent excess, consult the small-apartment guide, room spray techniques and choosing areas to scent.
